Who We Are

SilverbackHQ provides classroom tools for teachers and students. For GDPR purposes, SilverbackHQ is the data controller responsible for this website and service.

Where a school or teacher decides which students use SilverbackHQ and what work is submitted, that school or teacher may also have data protection responsibilities for the student data they choose to enter or share.

What We Collect

• Teachers: account details (name, email, username), login data, and usage data.
• Students: name, class, answers and results when completing quizzes or AI‑marked questions.
• Technical data: cookies used for login and link access, and basic request metadata.

Why We Use This Data (Lawful Basis)

• To provide the service you request (contract / legitimate interests).
• To secure accounts, prevent abuse, and keep the service reliable (legitimate interests).
• To improve the service based on usage and performance (legitimate interests).

Student Access (Schools & Teachers)

Student access is intended to be provided by schools/teachers. If you are a student, you should use a link or instructions provided by your teacher or school.

Teachers should only collect the student details needed to run the activity and should avoid asking students to submit sensitive personal information in answers.

Automated Processing

We use AI to generate feedback on answers. This is designed to support learning and should not be relied upon for high-stakes decisions. Teachers should review AI feedback where appropriate.

Student answers may be sent to an AI service provider so feedback can be generated. We use redaction routines to reduce personal data before AI processing where possible.

Security

• HTTPS is used for browser connections on the live/local test service.
• Teacher account access is protected by login cookies and password hashing.
• Personal data access is restricted to the functions needed to run, review, and administer the service.

Data Retention

Student quiz/exam answers and results are automatically deleted 30 days after a test is completed. AI question attempts are deleted 30 days after submission. Token visit logs are removed after a defined period. Teachers can also delete data from within the platform.

Sharing & Processors

We use service providers to run the platform (for example, email delivery and AI marking). These providers act as processors and are bound by data protection terms.

International Transfers

Some service providers may process data outside the UK. Where this happens, we use appropriate safeguards required under UK GDPR.

Your Rights

• Access, correction, deletion, and restriction of your data.
• Objection to processing in certain circumstances.
• Data portability where applicable.
• Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
